This foundation level course for teaching is designed for individuals who wish to work or are currently working as a teaching assistant in the lifelong learning sector. The course has the same syllabus as the PTTLS course, but with a different name as regulated by governing bodies.

Course Description

The Award in Education and Training is a comprehensive course suitable for teaching assistants who are new to teaching or training. This course provides a solid foundation for those who wish to pursue a career in teaching or training, as well as those already in these fields who want to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Throughout the course, teaching assistants will learn about important topics such as lesson planning, assessment methods, and inclusive teaching strategies. They will also gain an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher or trainer, as well as legal and regulatory requirements.

The course includes theoretical and practical sessions, including group discussions, interactive activities, and individual assignments. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to confidently plan and deliver effective teaching sessions, assess learning outcomes, and create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

After finishing the course, participants will receive the nationally recognised Award in Education and Training qualification. This course is ideal for teaching assistants who want to enhance their teaching or training skills or are considering a career in teaching or training.

  • Open Curriculum
    Open Curriculum allows access to our course materials for missed presentations and tutorials, as well as assignment submission, feedback facilities, and online discussions between students and tutors using discussion seminars, etc.

  • Which Units will I be learning?
    The course is modular and consists of a selection and mixture of units.
    8 Mandatory units and 6 Optional units for the Award pathway.

The following aspects of teaching must be taken:

  • An introduction to teaching
  • Understanding roles and responsibilities
  • Identifying individual needs
  • Adapting different teaching and learning approaches
  • Obtain skills in planning, delivering, observing and assessing teaching.
  • Student motivation
  • Record-keeping procedures
  • Quality assurance

Choose at least 6 units (incl. the first 2 units) from the following units:

  • Safeguarding Children in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • The Prevent Duty – Level 2
  • Child Neglect – Level 2
  • Communication Skills and Handling Information – Level 2
  • Conflict Resolution in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • Duty of Care, Privacy & Dignity – Level 2
  • Equality and Diversity in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • Fire Safety – Level 2
  • First Aid Essentials in Health _ Social Care – Level 2
  • Food Hygiene Essentials in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • How to be an Effective Fire Warden or Fire Marshal – Level 2
  • Infection Prevention and Control in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • Information Governance & Data Security in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • Personal Safety – Level 2
  • Person-Centred Care Approaches – Level 2
  • Employability Skills – Level 2

Entry requirements for the Award in Education and Training (AET) programmes include;

  • A minimum of 25 hours of teaching assistant experience
  • Level 2 skills in English or Mathematics (or Level 3 if they intend to teach/support literacy or numeracy)
  • Technical competency in literacy, numeracy and ICT for certain units
  • Non-academic requirements such as a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service Check) and a declaration of any criminal convictions.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • English is the base language of study.

There are two parts to the assessment for these qualifications:

  1. Multiple-choice questions – 50 questions each unit; 1-hour duration.
  2. Project/assignments – a production through STARR reporting formats (Situation, Tasks, Actions, Results & Reflections).

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are awarded a AET (Award in Education and Training) and may progress by direct-entry to the Certificate/Diploma course. Candidates may equally exit to employment and do well vocationally.
