Course Description

The Award in Health and Social Care is an entry-level qualification designed to equip individuals with the essential skills and knowledge required to begin a career as a care assistant in the health and social care sector. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles of care and aims to develop learners’ confidence and competence in delivering quality care to those in need.

The course covers a range of topics including person-centered care, communication skills, safeguarding, health and safety, and the importance of promoting equality and diversity in the workplace. Through interactive sessions, learners will gain an understanding of the role of care assistants in providing support to service users with different needs and preferences.

This course is ideal for individuals who are new to the care sector, those who are considering a career change, or those who wish to develop their existing knowledge and skills in the field of health and social care. The Award in Health and Social Care is also suitable for those who may wish to progress to a higher-level qualification in the future.

Assessment for this course is conducted through a combination of practical observations and written assessments. Learners will be expected to complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their understanding of the course content and their ability to apply it in a practical setting.

Upon successful completion of the Award in Health and Social Care, learners will be awarded a nationally recognised qualification that will enable them to work as a care assistant in a range of health and social care settings, including residential care homes, day centers, hospitals, and community care settings. This qualification is a stepping stone to a rewarding career in the health and social care sector and will provide learners with the skills and knowledge required to make a positive difference to the lives of those in their care.

  • Open Curriculum
    Open Curriculum allows access to our course materials for missed presentations and tutorials, as well as assignment submission, feedback facilities, and online discussions between students and tutors using discussion seminars, etc.

  • Which Units will I be learning?
    The course is modular and consists of a selection and mixture of units.
    9 Mandatory units and 6 Optional units for the Award pathway.

The following aspects of teaching must be taken:

  • Understanding roles and responsibilities

  • Record-keeping procedures
  • Quality assurance

Choose at least 6 units (incl. the first 2 units) from the following units:

  • Safeguarding in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • The Prevent Duty – Level 2
  • Client Neglect – Level 2
  • Communication Skills and Handling Information – Level 2
  • Conflict Resolution in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • Duty of Care, Privacy & Dignity – Level 2
  • Equality and Diversity in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • Fire Safety – Level 2
  • First Aid Essentials in Health & Social Care – Level 2
  • Food Hygiene Essentials in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • How to be an Effective Fire Warden or Fire Marshal – Level 2
  • Infection Prevention and Control in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • Information Governance & Data Security in Health and Social Care – Level 2
  • Personal Safety – Level 2
  • Person-Centred Care Approaches – Level 2
  • Employability Skills – Level 2

Entry requirements for the Award in Health and Social Care (AHSC) programmes include;

  • A minimum of 20 hours of care assistant experience
  • Level 2 skills in English or Mathematics
  • Technical competency in literacy, numeracy and ICT for computerised record keeping (if applicable)
  • Non-academic requirements such as a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service Check) and a declaration of any criminal convictions.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • English is the base language of study.

There are two parts to the assessment for these qualifications:

  1. Multiple-choice questions – 25 questions each unit; 30-min. duration.
  2. Portfolio/assignments – a portfolio of work production showcasing STARR reporting formats (Situation, Tasks, Actions, Results & Reflections).

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are awarded the Award in Health and Social Care (AHSC). The Award in Health and Social Care is also suitable for those who may wish to progress to a higher-level qualification in the future.
